Getting Software Out on Time ... for a Change

PROPOSED TOPIC: "How to Get Custom Software Out on Time ... for a change!"

IDEAL FORMAT: a 45 to 120 minute keynote or workshop presentation

BACKGROUND NEEDED: Designed for Managers of Software Development Groups or End users who need important software working in time to pay for themselves many times over..

MISSION:

Software products can take twice as much time and three times as much money to produce than they originally estimated.

Rather than bemoaning what if we could just make a schedule around here, companies should set aggressive policies and apply assertive techniques to change the results.

KEY OVERRIDING MESSAGE

There are two issues people should resolve early on in the project scooping phase.

    1. 1. Here's what I really want to build and here's the realistic date that can really be made.
    1. 2. Here is the market window date, and here's what we have to give up to make this date.

KEY POINTS

There are five big issues to getting software out on time, I.E. to make it predictable:

    1. 1. Strong requirements ....if not then you may have to build the system twice (Brooks, Mythical Man Month, but watch out for the second system syndrome that Brooks also mentions) ...then you've got a chance to predict how long it will take.
    1. 2. No feature creep!! (see 1 above)
    1. 3. Having all the people needed with the correct skills, including the correct investment in QA and tools. People underestimate how long it really takes to hire people, and second always under-invest (fund) QA and tools.
    1. 4. Strong project management leader with the team good at estimating the tasks to be done, etc., including testing time, etc.
    1. 5. The team committed to quality and the schedule.

GOAL: An attendee should be able to improve the way software is conceived, developed, delivered and maintained at or for their companies.
