My experience in this arena began 20 years ago when every manufacturer of Intel Based PC systems brought in a Consultant such as my self to write custom interface software for every peripheral and controller chip in their system. In those days, the CPM and DOS  operating systems were kits that needed custom software for every disk drive, serial communications chip, etc in the manufacturer's computer system.
